The prices for solar systems have dropped dramatically in the last ten years. This is due to increased production quantities. However, for political reasons none of us in the solar industry can rationally explain, the US decided to impose an import duty on solar cells and modules. This is going to raise the cost of modules in the near future.
Rebates are largely gone. Some are left in certain municipal utilities, and we use them when we can, but only SCE has any rebate left with the large utility districts, and it is very small and won’t last much longer.
The cost of installation has dropped because electrical contractors have all come to understand that solar systems install very easily and no longer charge a premium for this work.
Solar system inverters have gone through an evolutionary process to not only upgrade efficiency, but drop costs and make the installation easier.
There is no doubt that once the markets stabilize after dealing with this new import duty that the prices will continue to fall. However, with paybacks around 3 years, it means prices would have to drop by 33% in the next year to make it worth waiting. That is not going to happen, so there has never been a better time to Go Solar!
